The Itch of Winter Skin

Our Neenah Hometown pharmacist/partner, Jeff Cushman, talks Winter Dermatitis.

Do you ever get that feeling when the weather turns cold, (or downright nasty – like today!), the feeling of itchy skin? Besides just being unpleasant, cold weather can cause our skin to become dry, and therefore, itchy.

Jeff Cushman, Pharmacist/Partner:
The dry air of winter and the hot air of indoor heating systems rob our skin of moisture and create a condition called winter dermatitis. As a result of moisture being pulled from our skin, we experience an increased loss of skin cells. This loss of skin cells then leads to additional loss of water and oils in the skin. A vicious cycle develops leading to itchy, scaling, red and cracking skin.

There are several ways to fight off the effects of winter dermatitis. Effective treatment usually requires a combination of treatment options.

  • Reduce how often you bathe or shower. Use lukewarm water instead of taking very hot baths or showers. This reduces oil loss in the skin.
  • Replace standard soap with a mild synthetic soap.
  • Dab your skin dry vs. rubbing it dry. The more you rub the skin after bathing, the more skin cells you lose.
  • Increase fluid intake. Staying well hydrated will also help maintain moisture in the skin.
  • Apply emollients often and particularly after bathing.
    • AmLactin®
    • Lubriderm®
    • Aveeno®
    • Corn Huskers Lotion®
    • Very long list of others
There are a lot of very good creams and ointments on the market. Your pharmacist can help you to make the most appropriate selection based on your needs.

While you’re busy fighting off the cold, you can fight off winter dermatitis by using any of the above-mentioned methods. If you have any questions, or need recommendations, feel free to consult your local Hometown pharmacist!
